Outdoor Lap Swimming Pittsburgh: Best Pools & Lanes
Find Pittsburgh's best outdoor lap swimming pools for serious workouts. Discover dedicated lanes, fitness-focused facilities, and where to avoid summer crowds.
How we reported this

The early July heatwave has sent Pittsburghers searching for water. But for a growing number of residents, a crowded pool full of splashing kids and floating noodles won’t cut it. They are lap swimmers, and they are on the hunt for clear, open lanes under the summer sky, a surprisingly scarce commodity.
Swimming for fitness is more than just a way to beat the humidity. It’s a low-impact, full-body workout that combines cardiovascular benefits with strength training. For many, the rhythmic breathing and methodical pace is a form of active meditation. The challenge, especially from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is finding an outdoor facility that caters to exercisers, not just casual bathers, providing the dedicated space necessary for an uninterrupted workout.
From City Concrete to County Greens
In the city proper, the go-to destination remains the Highland Park Pool. Known affectionately as “The Res,” this 50-meter Olympic-sized pool has long been a haven for serious swimmers. Its sheer length is a major draw, allowing for longer stretches and fewer turns. The city’s Citiparks division typically ropes off at least two dedicated lap lanes throughout the day, ensuring space for those focused on logging mileage. Located just off Washington Boulevard, it’s an urban oasis that draws a dedicated crowd of regulars from Morningside to East Liberty.
For those willing to drive a bit further, the Allegheny County Parks system offers impressive alternatives set in more natural surroundings. The North Park Swimming Pool, built during the Works Progress Administration era, is a behemoth. At over five million gallons, its sheer scale means that even on a crowded Saturday, the designated lap swimming area feels spacious. The pool’s location, nestled among the trails and trees of the 3,075-acre park, provides a decidedly different atmosphere than its urban counterparts.
Securing access to these facilities requires some planning. An individual 2026 season pass for the four Allegheny County pools, North Park, South Park, Boyce Park, and Settlers Cabin, costs county residents around $80. Without a pass, daily admission is about $8 for an adult resident. The season is finite, with most public pools opening the first week of June and shutting their gates for the year on Labor Day, which falls on September 7th this year.
Planning Your Swim
The key for any lap swimmer is timing. While pools like Highland Park maintain lap lanes all day, the best conditions are almost always found first thing in the morning. County pools, including the popular Settlers Cabin Park Wave Pool, often have designated “lap swim only” hours, sometimes as early as 7:30 a.m., before the facility opens for general admission around 11:30 a.m. These early sessions offer quiet, calm water and a reprieve from the most intense afternoon sun.
Before heading out with goggles and a swim cap, it is essential to check the specific pool’s schedule online. Hours can change due to weather, staffing, or special events. Many dedicated swimmers find that arriving 15 minutes before the doors open is the best strategy to secure a preferred lane and enjoy the clean, cool water before the summer crowds descend.
